Purdue Sports Properties Secures Season-Long, Free Health Screenings

Boilermaker fans can take advantage of free health screenings on the Friday before each Purdue home football game this 2012 season, provided by Purdue Athletics’ partner Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  The screenings begin on August 31, at Marsh Supermarket, 2410 North Salisbury Street in West Lafayette.

On behalf of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing will be on hand from 3:30-6:30 p.m. to test heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose level and BMI (body mass index).  There also is the opportunity to obtain flu shots, consult with a dietician, speak with a pharmacist and receive tips on healthy food choices.  Each person participating in the screenings will be entered to win a $500 Marsh gift card, with winners announced for each session.

“What a terrific way to engage the community and Purdue football fans in an outreach that is critical to one’s health and well being,” said Purdue Athletics Director Morgan Burke.  “We’re proud to have partners like Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield supporting our student-athletes and community.  We certainly want to encourage people to take advantage of one of these health screenings before coming out to Ross-Ade Stadium the next day to cheer on the Boilermakers.”

A total of seven health screenings will be provided at no charge to the community.  Each Friday session will offer a different theme according to the following schedule and Purdue’s opponent for that week:

  • Aug. 31 (Eastern Kentucky) – focus on diabetes, with the American Diabetes Association
  • Sept. 14 (Eastern Michigan) – focus on the heart, with the American Heart Association
  • Sept. 28 (Marshall) – focus on pre-natal care, with the March of Dimes
  • Oct. 5 (Michigan) – focus on cancer, with the American Cancer Society
  • Oct. 12 (Wisconsin) – focus on childhood obesity, with the Boys & Girls Clubs
  • Nov. 2 (Penn State) – focus on active lifestyle
  • Nov. 23 (Indiana) – focus on tobacco and smoking, with the American Lung Association

”At Anthem, we are focused on not just the health of the individual, but also the health of our communities,” said Rob Hillman, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana. “This program is a great example of a community coming together to promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”
