Check one off the Bucket List
It’s quite a thrill to watch an F-18 do a tailhook landing 15 yards in front of you, and to feel the chest-pounding roar of the same plane taking off into the midnight darkness at the end of the flight deck. But also thrilling was watching as 3,500 souls who work tirelessly aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, then some 75 miles off the coast of North Carolina. I was honored to spend the night on the carrier and meet many of men and women of the Navy serving on the ship, including the Commander, Capt. Joe Carkson. Tom Maxwell, himself a retired Navy Captain (and father of our own Mike Maxwell), arranged the trip for me, as he had for Clyde a few years ago.
It was one of those “Bucket List” kinds of experiences. As breath taking was the size of the ship and her impressive technology, was the dedication of the men and women serving on her. It was awe-inspiring and convicting…there is so much I take for granted! Equally humbling is the recognition that all about us there are people, some of them in our own company, diligently serving in one capacity or another, doing the work most of us don’t want to do, doing it honorably and professionally, for the benefit of us all. That also takes my breath away…without the noise.

History of Learfield: Moving the Satellite Dish
We’d built a first-rate satellite system. We were the first land-line-free network in America. The original installation was at “the farm” near Marion, Mo. So as we were building the new building, Charlie Peters got FCC permission to locate this high-powered up-link at our new building in Jefferson City. The question was: how best to move it. There were several choices:
- Tear it down and rebuild it at the new site
- Load it onto a truck bed and move it on surface streets
- Hire a helicopter firm specializing in this and move it.
Tearing it down was expensive and time consuming. The ten-meter dish couldn’t be moved on surface streets because of height and width restrictions. So, we chose the helicopter. Meantime crowds had gathered in Jefferson City to watch. News teams were there. There was great anticipation. My son, Matt, was part of the team at Marion and filmed the event:

History of Learfield: A 14-year old video
Joyce Steinmann made a video for a company sales meeting in 1994. She's good! If you've been around here a long time, you'll see yourself and remember some of the folks who used to work here. Kinda in order are: Stan, Greg, Roger, Sandy Dulle, Stacey Kromer, Charlie, Mike Mayfield, Pam Smith, Doug, Susie Phillips, Kathy Albright, Rhonda Ludwig, Nip Neidert, Becky Rackers, Steve Camden, Karla, Clarice, Dick Marshall, Tom Brand, Todd Gibson, Rob Robinson and DW Cole.
I'm sorry for the quality, but this started as VHS and has been duplicated countless times. Enjoy.
