Learfield co-founder Derry Brownfield dead at 79

“May the good Lord bless and keep you whether near or far away. May the good you wish for others shine on you today. May your heart stay tuned to the music that will cheer the hearts of men. May the good Lord bless and keep you until we meet again.”

That’s how Derry signed off his daily talk show and it captures his love and enthusiasm for life. Derry died –of an apparent heart attack– at his home in California, Missouri, this weekend. He was 79.

The network that bears his name is remembering the man and his contributions today, as are others.

I remember hearing Derry speak at the rural electric co-op that my granparents were part of in Mercer County, MO. This was in the early 70′s. Derry had everyone laughing and slapping their legs as he spoke about farming, radio and feeding the world. One of the lines I remember was when someone asked about food shortages and having enough land to farm. Derry responded by saying America could always grows crops in the median of I-70. His voice was the one I heard in the morning milking cows with my uncle and explaining the importance of “barrows & gilts”. He will be missed.

So sorry to hear that Derry passed. I loved listening to his morning show and was wandering what happened to him today. He always had such high spirits and kept me in a good mood. He stood for America and the truth. I hope someone is there is keep up the fight for the cattle ranchers and to pass the torch of his fight for liberty and freedom in America.
